Postdoctoral Research Associate

Summary of Duties:

Postdoctoral Research Associates work independently as well as in a team environment on ongoing federal and state funded projects that deal with open- and in-field weather data driven model/tools development for site-specific weather forecasting and crop management decision support. Duties included but not limited to sensing site-specific weather, crop physiology through field deployment of distributed hardware, field data collection including ground-truthing at spatial and temporal scale for multiple sites, develop/modify site/station specific 1) 10-day weather forecasting and 2) crop stressors management models; assist team in preparing reports and peer-reviewed publications. Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Meteorology, Agricultural Engineering or a related field with experience in agrometeorology, crop/weather sensing, modeling the interaction between soil, weather, and crops, and forecasting.
  • Demonstrated experience & proficiency in python, R, cloud computing, and big-data analytics.
  • Demonstrated experience or interest in development of agricultural decision support tools.
  • Demonstrated experience with experimental design, field data collection and data analysis skills.
  • Demonstrated experience of individual initiative in research and pertinent publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain at the time of hire, a valid unrestricted driver’s license.

Cherry Breeding Program Research Intern

Posting Screening Date: This position has been posted as Open until Filled. The screening of applicants will begin on Monday, January 9, 2023.

Summary of Duties:

The cherry breeding program at WSU-IAREC is seeking a candidate to assist with plant propagation and greenhouse management, research orchard and orchard maintenance, and harvest, as well as working on collaborative research projects with other scientists at WSU. This position is expected to work independently, with minimal supervision. Primary duties include budding and grafting for propagation, monitoring the health of greenhouse, screenhouse and outdoor plantings to identify problems such as diseases and insect pests and taking appropriate control measures. The incumbent will participate in general program activities including plant propagation and general plant care. Field activities include planting, training, pruning, identification and analysis of superior seedling trees, harvest, trellis maintenance, irrigation system maintenance, overseeing or performing pesticide and fertilizer applications, and plant removal. The incumbent will also assist with collaborative plant pathology projects focused on X-disease and little cherry, propagating, maintaining, and measure effects on greenhouse and field-grown plants. Finally, the successful candidate will also assist with plant propagation, maintenance, and pesticide applications for the Clean Plant Center Northwest.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study or equivalent related field experience performing professional-level work with scientific or clinical research protocols. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Experimental and analytical skills; understanding and knowledge of research theory; interviewing experience; excellent organizational and project management skills.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain at the time of hire, a valid unrestricted driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters degree
  • One year experience in relevant research field of study

Work location will be Prosser, WA.

Monthly Salary: $4,450.57
